AusRegistry International gratefully acknowledges NeuStar®, Inc. (www.neustar.biz) for their assistance with ENUM Trial Information.

The Australian ENUM Trial is being managed by the ACMA in consultation with the Australian ENUM Discussion Group. AusRegistry International has been selected as the Registry operator for the Australian ENUM Domain for the duration of the Trial and will test certain ENUM functionalities using a standard EPP domain name based Registry. Service providers and equipment manufacturers will be invited to use these numbers to test client resolvers. Whilst the primary goal of the Trial is to assist service providers, equipment manufacturers and Registrars in developing services and equipment for ENUM, end users are also encouraged to take part.

The Trial is planned to run for at least 12 months with the possibility of being extended for a further 12 months. At the conclusion of the Trial a decision will be made by the ACMA as to whether a Commercial ENUM Registry is to be established.

AusRegistry International is a recognised wholesale domain name provider and is an active member of the domain name industry. AusRegistry International was established to provide the best practice Registry services to local and international markets.

This section should answer your questions about the ENUM Registry Trial, however any other questions can be directed to info@enum.com.au.

How do I register for the Trial?

You can register to become an accredited Trial Registrar for the Trial by going to the Registrars page on this web site. You will be required to achieve accreditation by AusRegistry International.

If you are an end user wishing to participate in the trial, you should contact an accredited Trial Registrar to register your ENUM services. A list of accredited Trial Registrars can be found at the Registrars page of this web site.

After you have been accepted as a Trial Registrar, you will need to follow the procedure as outlined on the Registrars section of the website to complete the accreditation process.

Who can participate in the ENUM Registry Trial?
Whilst the primary goal of the Trial is to assist service providers, equipment manufacturers and Registrars in developing services and equipment for ENUM, end users are also encouraged to take part. End users can participate by registering ENUM services through an accredited ENUM Trial Registrar.

What is the duration of the Trial?
The Trial is likely to run for at least one year, with the option to extend into two, at the end of which the ACMA may designate a national ENUM administrator.

What are the various stages of the trial?
The trial will be broken into three stages.

- Stage 1
Stage 1 will use E.164 numbers which have not yet been allocated for use by any Carriage Service Provider (CSP). The numbers will be allocated by the ACMA to AusRegistry International for allocation to accredited Registrars. This stage will be limited in its allowance to perform testing of the interaction between the PSTN and Internet networks. It will not support any to any connectivity that would allow a PSTN user to use the number to make a call to another user on the internet. This stage will however support limited routing of calls over private networks where the calls are routed via PABXs connected to Internet gateways.

- Stage 2
Stage 2 will only proceed if the results of Stage 1 are that Trial participants and industry give significant commitment to a commercial ENUM Registry in Australia. Acceptance of ENUM internationally will also play a part. Stage 2 will explore the issues associated with already allocated non-geographic numbers (for example mobile numbers).

- Stage 3
Stage 3 of the Trial is intended to explore the issues associated with using geographic E.164 numbers. This stage will only proceed if it is considered appropriate to use geographic numbers for ENUM.

How do you enable a product to use ENUM?
ENUM is a service that allows extra information to be published in the DNS system and listed with your telephone, or ENUM number. This information can be accessed through normal DNS lookups. For more information on ENUM please consult ftp://ftp.rfc-editor.org/in-notes/rfc3761.txt (ENUM) and ftp://ftp.rfc-editor.org/in-notes/rfc2915.txt

What kinds of services are available for provisioning?
Numbers will be able to be registered to be used with the following services: e-mail, phone, SIP, FAX, VPIM, H.323, HTTP, and LDAP. And virtually any other service that you can associate to via a URL.

Is there any cost involved?
Yes, there are fees for accredited Trial Registrars to connect to the Registry and an ongoing maintenance fee. To find out more about these fees, go to the Registrars section of this website or please contact us at info@enum.com.au

End users may also have to pay a fee to participate – this will be at the discretion of the accredited Trial Registrar the end user registers ENUM services through.

How do I test ENUM on my equipment?
It will be necessary to add DNS resolver capability to your products or services for testing ENUM capability

If the number +61397771234 is registered the plus will be dropped, the number will be reversed, dots representing DNS zones will be added between the numbers, and e164.arpa extensions will be appended to the end. This fully qualified domain name address (4.3.2.1.7.7.7.9.3.1.6.e164.arpa) will be used to query for NAPTR resource records in the DNS system.

How can I give feedback?
Feedback is welcome and can be directed to info@enum.com.au
